Noam Chomsky: Press reports in Israel indicate that, as expected, the government is delighted with the Hamas victory, which enables the government to persist in its "there is no partner" posture, enabling it to carry forward its programs of taking over the valuable parts of the West Bank and ensuring that remaining fragments left to Palestinians will be unviable -- a second prison alongside of Gaza, decisions now explicit with the announcement of the virtual annexation of the Jordan Valley and steps to expel the population gradually. The US position is probably more complex. Washington doubtless welcomes the opportunity to carry forward the Israeli plans for which it has provided decisive support. On the other hand, it is reasonably clear that Washington would have preferred to pursue these policies within the framework of a powerless Palestinian authority, reduced to weak rhetorical gestures and discrediting the cause of securing Palestinian national rights. A genuine commitment to realizing these rights was not one of the options. The non-option is supported by almost the entire world and by a considerable majority of the US population, but that is largely irrelevant, as in many other cases, and will remain so until real progress is made at home in "democracy promotion," to borrow a fashionable phrase.

There is no way for Hamas to rely on Iran. With US backing, Israel completely controls the territories, which are virtually insulated from the outside, and can cut off financial flows.

More important for us than speculating about what Palestinians can do under these onerous circumstances is to pay attention to what we can and should do. First, we should pay attention to some important facts. Deplorable and ominous as many of Hamas's public positions are, we should bear in mind that they are in crucial respects more moderate and forthcoming than the official positions of the US and Israel.

Pretty much anything goes in the world of Japanese erotic manga, but "Sekai Hatsu Shiawase Pantsu Shokai Gentei" (World's First Limited Edition Panties of Delight), one of the most wildly popular manga on the market, goes beyond being sickening.

Even Cyzo, a glossy monthly that could kindly be termed as "broad minded" is disgusted, saying "Has the world of Rorikon stooped this low?"

Rorikon, the Japanese word for pedophilia, is a contraction of the borrowed English words "Lolita," after the girl in Vladimir Nabokov's book of the same name, and "complex."

Reaction on the Net to manga like "Shiawase Pantsu" or "Sukumizu" is, frankly, alarming. Many regard the blatantly pedophilia products with humor, but even self-professed child lovers are too red-faced to talk about it.

"Not even I can make a comment about little girls' underpants being given away," an admitted pedophile tells Cyzo.

Most alarming about "Shiawase Pantsu," however, is the reaction from consumers. It has, the monthly notes, sold so well that reservations for advance orders have been shut off because the publishers can't keep up with demand.

Femme: Since we are in the business of torture, and the country has swung very far to the right, what are the realistic chances of getting a fair trial for the five?

Noam Chomsky: Well, first of all it is not really true that the country has swung far to the right. Though the press systematically refuses to report it, there are extensive public opinion studies taken in the United States. We know a great deal about public opinion, and I can give you some detail if you like. But what the studies shows, consistently, is that both political parties and the media are far to the right of the public on issue after issue, on a host of issues.

To give one example, the Federal Budget came out yesterday and today. Well there hasn't been time yet for a study of public attitude towards this budget, but it's about the same as the budget that came out a year ago, February 2005. Right after that the most prestigious institute that studies public opinion in the world, based in the University of Maryland, carried out a study of what people thought the budget ought to be, okay. And it was very striking. It was the exact inverse of the budget. Where federal spending was going up, the public wanted to go down: military spending, supplemental for Iraq and Afghanistan; where spending was going down, the public wanted to go up: social spending, health, education, veteran's benefits, renewable energy, support of the United Nations peacekeeping missions, on and on.

Furthermore, they were an overwhelming majority; and the scale of cutback and rises… [the] increases the public wanted, were enormous. Well, in a democratic society, one of the things you want to know is what your neighbor thinks. I mean if each person says "look, I am some kind of a lunatic, everything I read is something else," you are not going to get a functioning democracy. So we, therefore, want to know what happened to this information. I am willing to bet that almost none of you saw it. The reason is it was not published in a single newspaper in the United States, at least a single newspaper that's accessed by the standard database. Well, okay, so people don't know about it. I suspect the same is true of this budget. And you'll probably have the same study and the same suppression.

So it just isn't true, I mean there is case after case like this, it's just not true that the population has swung to the right. The government has, the parties have, the media have, the public hasn't.

Nine blocks modeled off the war-ravaged city are being built among cotton, rice and soybean fields. Olive Group, a British firm that supplies personnel and combat training for armies and corporations, plans to open three blocks this summer. A similar urban-combat operation, run by Direct Action Resource Center (←), has a mock Mogadishu in North Little Rock. Direct Action opened the 740-acre center in 1996 and gets nearly all its business from the military and other federal agencies. The International Peace Operations Association at Washington says about 100 companies provide support to the military in Iraq and those companies combined make about $20 billion a year. The 28 April massacre was soon being erased from history. Reporting from Fallujah on a US operation on 16 June 2003, the Telegraph (p. 10), the Guardian (p. 10), and the FT (p. 6) all referred to recent attacks on US soldiers in the town, and local hostility, without mentioning the massacre.

The terror continued throughout the decade. In November 1989, six Jesuit priests, their cook and her daughter, were murdered by the army. That same week, at least 28 other Salvadoran civilians were murdered, including the head of a major union, the leader of the organisation of university women, nine members of an Indian farming cooperative and ten university students.

The Jesuits were murdered by the Atlacatl Battalion, created, trained and equipped by the United States. It was formed in March 1981, when fifteen specialists in counterinsurgency were sent to El Salvador from the US Army School of Special Forces. The Battalion was consistently engaged in mass killing. A US trainer described its soldiers as "particularly ferocious... We've always had a hard time getting them to take prisoners instead of ears." (What Uncle Sam Really Wants, Noam Chomsky, 1993)

In December 1981, the Battalion killed a thousand civilians in a massacre that involved murder, rape and burning. Later, it was involved in the bombing of villages and the murder of hundreds of civilians by shooting, drowning and other horrors. The majority of its victims were women, children and the elderly.

The results of Salvadoran military training were graphically described in the Jesuit journal, America, by Daniel Santiago, a Catholic priest working in El Salvador. Santiago told of a peasant woman who came home one day to find her three children, her mother and her sister sitting around a table, each with its own decapitated head placed carefully on the table in front of the body, the hands arranged on top "as if each body was stroking its own head."

The killers, from the Salvadoran National Guard, had struggled to keep the head of an 18-month-old baby in place, so its hands were nailed onto it. A large plastic bowl filled with blood stood in the centre of the table.

I needn’t have worried. ‘Cigarette Burns’ is a stunning piece of television, Carpenter’s best work in years. The direction is slick and atmospheric, the music is moody but never intrusive, and the script is well-paced, always moving towards a chilling conclusion. There are lots of genre references scattered throughout the episode, but never in a beat-you-over-the-head, aren’t-we-cleverer-than-all-of you self-referential way. The structure is so nicely laid out that ‘Cigarette Burns’ could easily have worked as a full length feature, albeit with a few extra character beats and maybe an extended first act.

But if you wanted to be scared. I mean, if you genuinely wanted to watch an episode and watch suspense grow into unease into actual horror, "Cigarette Burns" is your best bet. Carpenter's episode is a delicious odyssey that begins with a film collector meeting an angel and ends with a one-of-a-kind film reel from Udo Kier. The story takes itself seriously, and the idea behind the story (a profane film drives people mad) allows for some truly gruesome scenes that add to the suspense. My only reservation about the episode, originally, was its underwhelming glimpse at "Le Fin Absolue du Monde." But that criticism seems smaller in retrospect. This was the only episode from the whole series that seriously scared me.

I studied under one of the professors profiled in this book. It was during the eighties. He was truly an evil man, always running down President Reagan's support of the Salvadoran death squads. He gave me an F on a paper I almost finished. He also laughed when I said that Daniel Ortega was possessed by Satan.

It got worse after that. He started to look at me in a strange way. I couldn't break his gaze no matter how much I tried. I now realized that he was using his special powers to turn me into a communist.

I eventfully grew out my hair, bought a beret and fatigues, and told everyone to call me Che. That confused a lot of my friends. They couldn't understand why Che would accessorize his uniform with a bright red feather boa. I tried to explain that red was the color of revolution, but they just couldn't get it.

They finally abandoned me when they caught me painting the Alpha Gamma Rho goat red while whistling the Internationale and wearing a crimson bra and panties. They really hated Stanford.

Anyway, Mr. Horowitz failed to mention the mind control this professor exercised over students like me. That's the most important part of the story. I can't give the book more than one star.

Particularly noteworthy is the divergence of popular attitudes from mainstream ideology. After 25 years of unremitting propaganda, including ten years of Reaganism, over 70 percent of the population still regard the Vietnam war as "fundamentally wrong and immoral," not a "mistake." Days before the U.S.-UK bombing began in the Gulf, the population, by two-to-one, favored a negotiated settlement with "linkage" rather than war. In these and numerous other cases, including domestic affairs and problems, the thoughts are individual and private; people have rarely if ever heard them publicly expressed. In part, that reflects the effectiveness of the system of cultural management; in part, the choices of left intellectuals.

Quite generally, there is a popular basis for addressing the human concerns that have long been part of "the Enlightenment project." One element that is lacking is the participation of left intellectuals.

However meritorious motives may be, the abandonment of these endeavors, in my opinion, reflects yet another triumph for the culture of power and privilege, and contributes to it. The same abandonment makes a notable contribution to the endless project of creating a version of history that will serve the reigning institutions. During periods of popular activism, many people are able to discern truths that are concealed by the cultural managers, and to learn a good deal about the world; Indochina and Central America are two striking recent examples. When activism declines, the commissar class, which never falters in its task, regains command. As left intellectuals abandon the field, truths that were once understood fade into individual memories, history is reshaped into an instrument of power, and the ground is laid for the enterprises to come.

The critique of "science" and "rationality" has many merits, which I haven't discussed. But as far as I can see, where valid and useful the critique is largely devoted to the perversion of the values of rational inquiry as they are "wrongly used" in a particular institutional setting. What is presented here as a deeper critique of their nature seems to me based on beliefs about the enterprise and its guiding values that have little basis. No coherent alternative is suggested, as far as I can discern; the reason, perhaps, is that there is none. What is suggested is a path that leads directly to disaster for people who need help--which means everyone, before too long.

I ended my earlier comments by recalling that many scientists, not too long ago, took an active part in the lively working class culture of the day seeking to compensate for the class character of the cultural institutions through programs of workers' education, or by writing books on mathematics, science, and other topics for the general public. C'est le gouvernement français [...] qui a suggéré qu'il y ait une administration sous tutelle, comme au Kosovo. Ce n'était pas une intervention, ont-ils dit, c'était la responsabilité de protéger.»

Dans un article paru dans l'Actualité, Michel Vastel cite Paradis: «Si les Canadiens traitaient leurs animaux comme les autorités haïtiennes traitent leurs citoyens, on les mettrait en prison». «En Afrique, j'ai vu la pauvreté dans la dignité, raconte Denis Paradis. En Haïti, il n'y a même plus de dignité!»

Paradis conclut que la communauté internationale ne voudrait pas attendre la fin du mandat d'Aristide, qui se terminait en 2005. «Même si les Nations unies ne souhaitent pas que ce genre d'intervention conduise à une occupation militaire, celle-ci pourrait être inévitable jusqu'à ce que des élections aient été organisées», écrit Michel Vastel.

In the frenzied marketing run-up to the release of its PlayStation 3, Sony cranked up the heat by offering a survey to its Playstation Underground members about HDTV use and importance. In the middle of that survey Sony let slip a little tantalizing tidbit of info about the PS3 and 1080p, that progressive-scanning holy grail of HDTVocity which amounts to the highest resolution the standard can achieve. Our friends and brethren at Kotaku got their hands on that Sony survey, and direct our attention to question number three: "The PlayStation®3 will include BluRay™, the high definition DVD technology, and support games in resolutions of up to 1080p, (the highest supported standard on the market.) Given that information, please choose the statement below that best describes you."

Not so fast—it might not be that easy to just send 1080p to a monitor and have it received, no questions asked. That 1080p capability is all well and good, but will it support the still-being-determined copy protection scheme known as HDCP? Will the monitors be able to receive it? The way 1080p monitors and 1080p sources talk to each other these days is still in its infancy, so good luck if you want to actually use this 1080p capability.

RSF does report on some discrimination against journalists, but in a very selective way, that is, targeting nations on the US State Department "hit list": Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc., while ignoring any and all anti-journalist activities in areas allied with the US, and of course, never in the US itself.

For three examples of many to give the idea: RSF does not defend reporters in the Phillippines, which is the second deadliest nation for journalists after Iraq but is a strong ally of the US military. RSF completely ignores Mumia abu Jamal, a US reporter on death row and the object of support from "other" human rights organizations all over the globe. And in a recent interview, despite his very close ties with the Cuban-American community in Miami, RSF director Robert Menard claimed to be completely "unfamiliar" with the case of the Cuban Five. The Five, one of whom is a Cuban journalist, are serving life sentences in US prisons for infiltrating these Miami groups to prevent terrorist attacks on their homeland.

This denial ties into the major activity (time, money and propaganda campaigns) of RSF, which is defaming the Cuban Revolution, trying to prevent European tourists from visiting the Island, and serving as a news agency and defender for "dissident reporters". The latter, according to Nestor Baguer -founder of the Independent Cuban Journalist Association, their reporter of longest duration, and the main Cuban representative of RSF, who later revealed himself as a Cuban security agent- were "neither journalists nor dissidents", but mercenaries paid to write as dictated by the RSF, the US Interest Section in Havana, and Florida-based hate groups.

RSF, in Menard’s own words in an interview in 2000, has always considered Cuba the priority in Latin America, even giving the country a lower ranking on its press freedom index than countries where journalists routinely have been killed, such as Colombia, Peru and Mexico.

Although incurious about the fate of journalists in Venezuela before President Hugo Chavez, RSF was very quick to support the coup d’etat against him, of course it had to be as the coup was very brief. Menard’s group has since been outspoken against what it alleges to be anti-freedom of the press legislation in Venezuela, without evidently having read said legislation, and while incidently having a close relationship with Venezuelan multi-millionaire media giant Gustavo Cisneros.

Picture this: A cartoon of Jesus, with his pants down, smiling, raping a little boy. The caption above it reads "Got Catholicism?" Or how about a picture of a Rabbi with blood dripping from his mouth after bludgeoning a small Palestinian boy with a knife shaped like the Star of David--the caption reads "The Devil's Chosen Ones."

I wonder if people around the world would just consider this free speech? Of course, some would condone or agree with one, two or all three, while others would say "it's free speech," although they "find it offensive and in poor taste." But do you honestly think media outlets such as the BBC, Le Monde, or any media outlet in Copenhagen would pick up these cartoons? The outrage would begin instantly and advertisers would pullout. Yet, those in Denmark and their supporters around Europe call it freedom of speech to have a cartoon of the prophet Mohammed--who is not supposed be depicted to prevent idolatry according to clerical interpretation of the Koran--with a turban shaped like a bomb on his head.

Il s'agit d'une sorte de vidéoclip pour la chanson thème Kiss Me Goodbye interprétée par la non-ethniquement japonaise mais néanmoins ravissante Angela Aki et composée par le génialissime Nobuo! Kawaii! En anglais, peut-être, mais la version japonaise devrait exister (croisement de doigts), comme ça avait été le cas pour Melodies of Life de FFIX. Le vidéoclip de Kiss Me Goodbye est inclus sur le CD-DVD maxi-simple de l'ordinaire Kokoro No Senshi, je vous conseille plutôt Home (★★★☆).

L'orgie médiatique nombriliste autour de la liberté d'expression suite aux réactions de leaders musulmans aux douze célèbres caricatures donne carrément l'impression de vivre dans la matrice. C'est tout ce qu'ils voient et analysent, la liberté d'expression, joué en boucle, en rétroaction dynamique où tous jouissent de caqueter le même message à l'unisson, avec quelques bonnes âmes qui ajoutent le nécessaire besoin d'une certaine 'sensibilité aux croyances' de l'Autre. C'est le bon occident face aux lapideurs de femmes, leçon de démocratie numéro 126: 'comment juger les limites de la liberté d'expression'. Et pas raison de se gêner, pourquoi pas citer du Orwell pour leur reprocher leur nationalisme ? Personne pour parler du triste compte qui accompagne ces caricatures: le nombre de musulmans que le bon occident a tué, a fortiori personne pour le comparer avec le compte inverse.

Il me vient l'envie furieuse de me faire un brassard nazi et d'aller me promener dans les coins polonais de montréal, pour sauver la liberté d'expression. Mais le Danemark est en Irak en ce moment, pas dans le passé.

first came kidz bop, now here’s dev2.0. we should be well accustomed to pop eating itself these days, but dev2.0 have just upped the ante. here’s the deal - the five original members of devo get together in a studio, re-record their back catalogue with one main difference - the vocals are performed by a 12-year old girl called nicole, and the band are now dev2.0. the end result - dev2.0 seem to “belong” to disney, they are the new monkees, five 10-13 y.o.s mousketeers, making new videos to accompany old devo tracks. there’s even two brand new devo tracks on the album, released with a companion dvd on march 14. i’m simultaneously appalled and tickled red raw at the same time.

Marc Labrèche a réalisé un de mes fantasmes au Fric Show ce soir: il s'est emparé de l'intercom d'une grande surface et s'est mis à débiter des drôleries sérieuses: "chers clients, nous tenons à vous rappeler que nous offrons les prix les plus bas, tout aussi bas que les salaires de nos employés". Il a réussi à en faire 4-5 comme ça avant qu'ils coupent la ligne.

Les deux auteurs d'un rapport de recherche élaboré pour le compte du Centre d'étude sur les médias de l'Université Laval publiaient quelques conclusions dans Le Devoir:

[...] la grande majorité des auditeurs a affirmé ne s'être jamais intéressée aux questions politiques (même à celle de la liberté d'expression) avant que la menace de fermeture de la station ne soit présentée sous cet aspect.

De plus, cette dépolitisation s'accompagne, du point de vue culturel, de la participation active des auditeurs à ce que nous qualifions de «société des loisirs» : les divertissements tels que le cinéma et la musique à la sauce américaine ainsi que les médias populistes arrivent au premier rang dans le choix des auditeurs. En outre, ils sont aussi de très bons consommateurs d'activités récréatives, notamment celles liées à la station CHOI-FM, et ils s'identifient fortement à la publicité et aux marques dont la station fait la promotion.

Bref, l'attrait politique et les questions d'intérêt public ne sont que secondaires dans l'économie d'ensemble du mode de vie, en tout point axé sur la culture de la consommation de masse, de l'auditoire mobilisé dans cette cause.

Mimétisme

Pour ce qui est du voile politique que revêt ce phénomène, il s'explique par le fait que le discours des auditeurs est en tout point le reflet de celui des animateurs.

Ce mimétisme s'est confirmé lorsque nous avons interrogé les auditeurs sur les opinions sociales et politiques qu'ils défendaient : en effet, en ce qui a trait au volet social et politique, les réponses qu'avançaient les auditeurs ainsi que leur signification étaient systématiquement limitées à celles que nous pouvions entendre sur les ondes le matin, le midi ou dans les jours précédant les entrevues.

Le fait le plus remarquable que nous ayons relevé dans cette affaire est que le discours auquel adhèrent les auditeurs exerce une emprise extrêmement forte chez eux. Même si le contenu discursif est éphémère, le laps de temps pendant lequel ils y adhèrent, si court soit-il, les captive et les fascine : il les mobilise. Cette observation permet de montrer du doigt un phénomène de société qui n'a cessé de prendre de l'ampleur ces dernières années : l'alliance entre une nouvelle forme de populisme et les médias de masse, qui exploite un ressentiment de plus en plus grand de certaines couches sociales à l'endroit des grandes institutions publiques.

À ce titre, la ville de Québec semble être un véritable laboratoire au chapitre de cette nouvelle tendance de fond qui traverse beaucoup de démocraties occidentales.
